About the NEW RVC Hour of Code - Learn at Home Edition
What is RVC Hour of Code - Learn at Home Edition
- For Grades 1+
- When is this happening?
- Every Tuesday at 11am CST via ZOOM
- Starts Tuesday, May 12th!
- Format
- Connect Time: We connect to via students via Zoom and teach a basic coding concept & lesson
- Please have 3-4 sheets of paper & pencil
- Coding Time: We facilitate fun coding lessons!
- Share Time: Students will share their code creations! Parents will take photos of students working on coding lesson and post on social media with hashtag #RVCHourOfCode
- Connect Time: We connect to via students via Zoom and teach a basic coding concept & lesson

- Before we start, submit your photo.

- Take your photo, download and submit below before Tuesday at 10am

- Click “Ready, Smile”
- Click “use my camera” then “allow”
- Click on the camera icon to take photo
- Click “Save” to download photo

Required Resources
- Zoom - Students will connect with Professor Chuck using Zoom to go over a new coding concept. Students will also learn about his own career as a developer and what coding languages he knows and uses everyday.
- Repl.it - This free online tool will be used for students to build with different types of coding languages
- Computer or Laptop with internet connection and speakers.
About Computer Information Systems & Timeline of the RVC Hour of Code
- Since 2015, The Computer Information Systems (CIS) faculty of Rock Valley College have held public workshops on coding, computer building and robotics. In total, these workshops have reached over 3000 students from the Rockford region! (see post)
- The RVC Hour of Code demystifies computer science and is offered as a community outreach of Rock Valley College.
- CIS faculty, RVC students, RVC administrators, and local leaders have volunteered of their time, talent and resources to help make the "RVC Hour of Code" a successful and worthwhile endeavor.
- December 12th 2015. The inaugural “Hour of Code” event at Rock Valley College brought 126 people from the Rockford Region to learn more about computer science fundamentals and coding!
- January 2016. To keep the momentum, Professor Chuck Konkol, CIS faculty at Rock Valley College began hosting a monthly “RVC Hour of Code” workshops.
- In 2017, we started see "RVC Hour of Code" students register for our programming courses.
- In 2018, Cherryvale Mall began hosting the RVC Hour of Code at no cost to the college. They setup the tables, chairs and provide internet.
- In 2019, the YMCA of Rock River Valley began hosting the RVC Hour of Code every other month.
- In March 2019, due to the Corona virus, we had to cancel all RVC Hour of Code workshops at the Cherryvale Mall & YMCA.
- May 12, 2019 launches the new online RVC Hour of Code - Learn at Home Edition
